so we had another session of our homebrew fairy tale campaign yesterday. I forgot to put up a song for Dalton, but that's okay because BIG THINGS happened in that session. my paladin broke his oath.

Dalton is an oath of redemption paladin who swore to try for a peaceful solution first. he took the oath in prison as an attempt to a) live up to the ideals of the man he's hopelessly in love with and b) make amends for the things he did in service of the god of the elves, including killing clerics of "enemy" gods. but there was always a fault line in that promise. before Dalton went to prison, he met the banished brother of a corrupt king and became so loyal to him that he was known as Kristoff's hound. he figured he had blood on his hands already, and he was willing to spill as much as he needed to in order to keep Kristoff safe. that's not the kind of thing that's easily shaken off even after five years of separation.

Dalton's been struggling with his oath already. when he came across an elven assassin of his home country who tried to enlist him to help kill Kristoff, he didn't try a peaceful solution even though the assassin is as much a victim of indoctrination as he was before he met Kristoff. he just agreed and followed the assassin under the cover of the treeline, where he promptly drew his sword, backstabbed the assassin, and killed him with one strike. then he tore his holy symbol off and coldly hid the body. there was no decision to be made; the second someone threatened Kristoff, he remembered who he was. Kristoff's hound.

Dalton told the party almost immediately, which is a one-up on him not bothering to warn them about his oath of redemption. he said he was a fool to think he could save anyone, and things would be different from now on.

later that night, Kristoff reached out to him via a spell to see how things were going. (oops.) Dalton told him about the assassin, unable to meet his eyes, and the party's rogue (who was very drunk) blurted out that Dalton broke his oaths by killing a man. Kristoff didn't flinch; when Dalton said in agony that this was the second oath he's broken in his life, Kristoff told Dalton to swear an oath to him, then, because they'd never broken faith in each other. promise to come back. Dalton did, and he told Kristoff he loves him. it was enough. a new oath snapped into place: the oath of true love, a homebrew paladin oath that T worked out for me. it's a weird combo of oath of the crown and brand shiny new stuff, and I am very excited about it.
