nilchance: original art from a vintage print; art of a woman being struck by lightning (Misha is pretty)

Very very very brief AKB meta: when I'm writing Misha as using sign or fingerspelling, it's meant to be American Sign Language and not Signing Exact English. The two systems differ in that Signing Exact English is a literal manual translation of spoken English, and ASL has a different set of grammatical rules in which meaning can be derived by hand motion/position and by facial expression. However, I write the overall meaning of what Misha signs as I would spoken English because, frankly, it's easier.

I'm sure there's also another 'dialect' of sign used strictly by front-of-house/back-of-house slaves in order to conduct their duties (or private business) in front of the owners.

As someone who studied ASL, I thank you for this clarification.

I actually suspend my belief when it comes to italizied ASL. I assume the grammer is correct and it's just a translation. It's when people try to be fancy and start looking up words online and describing signs that I start cringing. I have never met a deaf person who would actually sign "am" or "is". It's unnessisary.

No problem. I took very very elementary ASL and so I don't claim to be an expert, but I know enough to get myself in trouble. ;)
