nilchance: original art from a vintage print; art of a woman being struck by lightning (HABIT HAS ME)

The personal: I exist, though mostly in e-mail. May was a crappy month between my birthday (omg I was supposed to have my doctorate and two books published by now why do I faiiiil) and my mom's birthday and being massively anemic and health insurance and all that bullshit.

The blather under the cut about EMH is actually the most I've written in a while. Pressure free chatter! I love it.

- Jeff has said in his real-life blog that he's a fan of Whedon. Um. It shows, in One Step Forward for good and ill: mood whiplash! angst! horror! angst! dead women! angst! adults are useless! ANGST.
- I'm not sure why they needed to show Alex in that t-shirt with the buff arms and the shoulders and the hips and then, bam, he's talking to his dead mom in a cd player. (Didn't quite realize that kids these days listened to cd players. Put your dead mom in his iPod already, Jeff.) Oh right, because it's skin-crawlingly awful to watch. Jeff's helplessness, Alex's oblivious perkiness, all of it.
- Sorry, Vince, but straight up telling Jeff "this isn't the normal grieving process" is the morally correct, HEALTHY, but not necessarily helpful action. This is Jeff's normal. What is he going to do, drop him off at the hospital? Let him talk to a shrink, reveal exactly how sick he is (with bonus "there's a monster stalking us" sauce) and have him taken away where Jeff can't protect him? Yeah, no. Nice Hot Fuzz t-shirt, though.
- With the tape and Jeff saying they don't have to do this anymore, one wonders if Jeff and Alex had a functional family to begin with.
- Vinnie telling Jeff not to use the footage of the library staff is sadly endearing. Adorkable. Also a smart decision, given that everybody who gets caught by Jeff's camera has an increased chance of Slender-death. Vinnie is Lawful Good.
- Jeff looks exhausted.
- In a just world, they would stumble on a helpful demon hunter (demon hunting brothers, even) who could hunt things, save people, family business. EMH is not a just world, and Evan is the closest thing they have to a Dean Winchester. They are so fucked.
- Speaking of adorkable: SCRABBLE. "How does one wifin'?" "Well, one should stay away from wifin'." Evan seems so much more at ease with Alex than Vinnie, which follows, because they're both dealing with the assumption that they're crazy. Which they are, granted, but we know it grates on Evan. For instance, Evan can walk in circles for several minutes and it's just Evan being Evan; Alex gets up from the scrabble board, stares out the window for several minutes, and nobody notices because... idk, it's just Alex being Alex? Yep.
- "It's back." Third time I've watched this vid and that still raises the hair on my arms.
- Sparkyyyyy. *sadface*
- I love the brief shoving match between Evan and Alex over who gets to go into the shed. Again Evan displays adult common sense by keeping the unstable teenager from going into the shed, while Jeff stands on the porch and kinda flails like a Muppet. Sorry, Jeff. And then again when Evan's cleaning out his wounds and is the one to notice Alex curled in the fetal position around Sparky's collar. Anyway, my shipper heart is showing here. But I don't think that reflects badly on Jeff. He's only just older than Alex, and badly out of his depth. His parents and gf are dead, his brother is ill, and they're being hunted by three evil killer things, and nobody can help, and he knows they're screwed; he could give Sam Winchester a serious run for his FML money. Would someone love them already plz?
- Coincidentally, where the hell was Steph during all this? Did she get to stitch Evan's arm?
- Argh, that Rake noise. *cringe*

And then I had a Fridge Brilliance moment that I'm copypasta-ing from email because I'm lazy:
"Okay, so for clarity because I know it's not your show, there's Jeff
and Alex the (erotically codepedent) orphaned brothers. At the
beginning of the series Alex is presented as a normal if slow 15 year
old boy. And then it comes out that Jeff works as a data entry drone
at a mental hospital (because he has keycards and hacks one
character's records out of existence, whatever, it's not even vaguely
realistic that a 19 year old entry level guy in records would have
those accesses but FANWANK) even though he is an economics major with
no interest in psychology. And then it comes out that their parents
are dead but Jeff pretends otherwise for "personal reasons". And then
it comes out that Alex sees and talks to his parents, believing
they're still alive. Vinnie, Jeff's buddy, is like "dude, Jeff, that
isn't normal grieving," and Jeff says "yeah, I know, I'll talk to his
doctor."

My fanwank math of these factors = Alex is spacey because he's on
anti-psychotics and Jeff is working in the hospital, aware of how to
break people out, in case Alex is ever found out and hospitalized.

*tada hands*

Like I said, I'm amazed it took me this long to be like "omg, he's not
dumb, he's MEDICATED," because I've been on anti-psychotics and I was
just as delayed in my reactions."

And it's taken me 3 hours to finish this entry and I forgot my ending phrase.
