Have you ever read Mercedes Lackey? Don't rush, if not-she's a hit or miss writer, has fantastic ideas but is not as capable of fulfilling them as one might wish (much like Rowling, cue familiar rant, heh). But the "lifebond" she invented for her Valdemar series is one of the most intriguing things she came up with.
If you're familiar with it, skip this. :D
It's a mental and emotional soulbond that forms without volition from either party; it's usually between two partners, but it's not unknown for it to form among three;when one partner dies, the other one usually dies, too, unless someone else is *right there* who's suitable for another bond to form spontaneously (which almost never happens);and it's usually formed between a very solid, strong, supportive and loving person and a highly gifted but emotionally/mentally troubled person (frequently sexually and/or physically abused), to stabilize the latter and provide the former something to pour out their deep devotion on. The people involved don't even have to know each other, for the bond to form, usually at their first meeting; they both suffer intensely, until the bond is acknowledged, and the more they fight it, the worse it gets. Both partners usually end up growing, in many ways, as the bond forces them to benefit each other; and they end up loving each other intensely, because the soulbond *always* picks the right partners for each other.
Sounds good, right? :D
It reminds me of Recognition, in the Elfquest comics. I love those!
