And then the world blanched white, and Dean wasn't on the ground anymore. He was between, clinging to Lucifer with hands he couldn't feel, stinging to blindness with eyes that didn't see. He couldn't breathe.
Just when he thought it would be too much, as his lungs started to burn, the air cleared and he felt solid ground under his feet. Dean blinked a few times, the shitty 70s decor of Heaven resolving slowly in his vision. He swung his gun up, casing the room, and shoved Lucifer with the barrel. The bastard just studied him like he'd done something interesting. Being interesting, in Dean's case, had never paid off.
Over in a corner of the room, her body swallowed up by an overstuffed chair, was Anna. Her hair was like a bleeding wound against the room's muted beige.
"Dean? You're alive!" Anna hurried from the chair she'd been sitting in to hug him. "That's wonderful."
"Are you all right?" he asked. There was a blankness to her eyes that worried him.
"I am well. I have seen the error of my ways." Anna smiled, glazed. "Castiel was correct in his obedience."
Ah, shit.
Lucifer moved a little, like he wanted to touch her shoulder. It attracted her attention, and Anna's face changed to fury. She shoved Dean behind her with all that angel strength, spitting, "Unclean spawn! King of Lies! I cast thee out-"
"Ah," Lucifer drawled, "the good old names."
Apparently Lucifer's perennial smirk unhinged Anna, and she flung herself across the room at him. Dean didn't think before grabbing her by the waist; he should've let her claw Lucifer's face off. She was too light in his arms, smelling like sickness up close, and something cloying. Perfume? She hadn't worn anything before but the soft clean smell of soap; perfume was like a bad fitting suit on her. "Whore!" she screamed. "I'll kill you! I'll have your lying eyes!"
"Oh, sister," Lucifer murmured. He fought her grip on his wrist, bringing his hand up to touch Anna's head. "Anael, attend!" he said sternly. "You're better than their brainwashing!"
To Dean's surprise, Anna went limp, nearly slithering out of Dean's arms.
"Hey!" Dean objected. "Knock it off with the angel mojo. What's wrong with her?"
"Time in heaven, surrounded by filth like Zachariah." Lucifer's hand touched Anna's head, and the hair on the back of Dean's neck prickled, like standing too close to a lightning strike.
A gasp slid out of Anna's mouth, her head jerking up to stare at Lucifer, nearly cracking Dean on the chin.
"Brother," she whispered, voice trembling. "Lightbringer. Have you been forgiven?"
"Hello, Anael," Lucifer murmured.
If Anna noticed that he'd dodged her question, she seemed to take it in stride. She wriggled away from Dean and threw her arms around Lucifer, nearly taking him down with her enthusiasm. "I missed you." Seeing Dean over Lucifer's shoulder, Anna beamed. It was very Stepford. "Dean! How is Sam?"
"He's okay. Guilty as hell." Dean shot a glance at Lucifer. "Uh, you're hugging Satan."
"Lucifer," snitted the devil, like that actually changed things. He touched Anna's face with light fingers, grimaced. "She's not healed yet. Michael must have really had to mess her up to make her obey. Grubby minded bastard."
"Michael?" Anna asked. "Morningstar, you should not talk thusly about our brother, who is strong and brave, who will be my husband--"
Dean swore.
"Oh, for Christ's sake," Lucifer muttered, putting his hand on her forehead. Anna didn't resist, peering at him, blank as Castiel. "He's a fucking asshole, Anael. C'mon, what did he do to you?"
Anna went still, her mouth moving in silence, eyes wide. Her hands twitched like she was seizing, and Dean reached for Lucifer to pull him away. "Stop it! You're hurting her."
"Don't," Lucifer's voice was sharp, a near physical whipcrack of sound that Dean hated himself for obeying. "If you interrupt now she'll be left broken."
It must have been only seconds, but it felt like a lifetime before Lucifer withdrew his hand. Anna crumpled, and Dean barely managed to cushion her as she slid back down.
When Lucifer looked at Dean, his eyes had darkened, anger riding the delicate lines of his face. "Stay with her," Lucifer ordered. "I will be back in a moment. Someone will pay for this obscenity."
A chill slid up Dean's spine as Lucifer disappeared. What the hell had he been thinking? He was stuck here with a creature of unknown power and one unconscious angel on his side. Against Satan. Dad would have tanned his fucking hide for something like this.
Then again, he'd done a lot of unforgivable things.
"Dean?" Anna murmured, stirring. "What happened?"
"I... don't know. You okay?" Dean supported her as she climbed shakily to her feet. "What did he do to you?"
She stared at him for a moment, not seeming to understand. Then her eyes closed. "Michael," she spat.
"Unfortunately, he has left," Lucifer said, returning from his little walkabout. "Coward."
This time, Anna didn't seem to have reservations about the Morningstar. "Brother," she whispered, opening her arms to Lucifer. "You've returned." Her lips tightened into a thin line. "The Mother and Father are missing. I fear Michael has trapped them somewhere."
To Dean's surprise, Lucifer leaned on her a little, burying his face in her neck. "I missed you."
Anna smiled, a real one for all its bitter-sweetness, and pressed her cheek to the top of Lucifer's head. Dean felt a tug that might've been jealousy, and Anna met his eyes like she'd been hearing his thoughts on Angel Radio. She seemed to find Dean's reaction funny.
After a long moment, Lucifer straightened, clearing his throat. "Anyway. There was one idiot who didn't run." He waved a hand, and Zachariah dropped from the ceiling. Literally, fell from the sky and landed hard.
"Blasphemy!" Struggling upright, Zachariah sneered at Lucifer. "You dare to stain Heaven with your-" Zachariah's eyes landed on Dean, and his lips twisted. "Ah. Even here, you still persist in your infatuation with this... human? Alastair's whore?"
Something ugly stirred inside Dean; his lips peeled back from his teeth.
Before the words had faded, Zachariah's head snapped to the side with the force of Lucifer's backhand. "Watch your mouth," Lucifer said, his voice hard. "Or I'll cut out your filthy tongue."
"Hit a nerve?" Zachariah taunted. "Too bad he knows exactly what you are. No getting by on lies and technicalities, 'Andrew'. He's not gonna bend over for you here--"
Lucifer lashed out, a violent blur of motion, and then Zachariah was howling and Lucifer was holding a bright glow in the palm of his hand. Dean looked to Anna and found her teeth bared. Zachariah tried to grab back whatever Lucifer had taken, only to get kicked back down to the ground.
"You're a shitty angel," Lucifer spat. "And I doubt you're going to be a better human. But at least then you won't be able to do as much harm." His inhuman eyes flicked to Dean for a moment. "He's all yours. Don't kill him. You're better than that."
"I'm really not," Dean assured him, enjoying the flicker of fear across Zachariah's face.
"You are," Anna said softly, reaching over to stroke his arm.
"Anael, I'm going to duck out for a moment; see how many of our companions are imprisoned." Lucifer asked. "Will you stay here with Dean?"
Just as Dean was opening his mouth to protest, Lucifer smiled. 'Keep an eye on her, please?' he heard clearly in his mind.
"Don't fucking do that," Dean growled. "Yes, fine. Go. Whatever." His eyes slid back to Zachariah, a feral smile touching his lips. "I'll figure out a way to keep busy."
