Swine Flu, debunking the myths. Brace yourself for some media panic, y'all.

What Is and Isn't Racist: in short, a POC's definition of what's racist beats a white person's definition because POC deal with racism EVERY DAY. Every day. Even those white allies who try to unpack their own privilege can disengage when it gets to be too hard, but POC don't have that option.

Defining intolerance: Carrie Prejean says that she believes in "opposite marriage". My saying that her opinion is wrong is not intolerance, because of the difference between an opinion and a basic civil right.

A study in Psychomatics "proves" that people with Chronic Fatigue have personality deficits? Yeah, sure. Quote: People with CFS worry about what’s going to happen to them, avoid activities that harm them, and set their outlook sights too low. This is maladaptive. People with CFS also don’t worry enough about what’s going to happen to them, persistently engage in activities that harm them, and set their sights unrealistically high. This is maladaptive.

In related news, Blogging Againsr Disablism Day is May 1st. I'll be participating (my first year! I'm a BAD virgin!) and I encourage everybody else to do so.

thanks for posting that Swine Flu link, I've been working up a bit of a panic here, I live with a person with almost no immune system so I tend to worry. Also I have a thing for plague books and that doesn't really help :)

In other words, people with CFS have the exact same potential for pessimism or optimism as everybody else, and living with a chronic illness is the kind of thing that leaves you vaccillating between "everything's shit" and "maybe this'll go away one day". Wow. I hope these people aren't getting paid much to state the bleeding obvious, and then pathologise it.

I like how in this:

People with CFS worry about what’s going to happen to them, avoid activities that harm them, and set their outlook sights too low. This is maladaptive. People with CFS also don’t worry enough about what’s going to happen to them, persistently engage in activities that harm them, and set their sights unrealistically high. This is maladaptive.

You could replace 'CFS' with just about any chronic pain condition and come out with the same statement. (For example - people with Psoriatic Arthritis - a medically documentable condition, with no way someone can say it's 'made up' or 'in people's heads' - pretty much have those exact problems.)

I...can't seem to fathom the depth of stupidity, or the remove from reality of the people responsible for those links. The world outside my personal sensorium is a myth? How can people exist with minds that circumscribed? Makes me tired trying to understand.
