- Will Shetterly: STILL on the list of fucking FAIL white privileged sci-fi authors. Apparently in order to silence discussion of racism in sci-fi, he revealed POC blogger [livejournal.com profile] coffeeandink's full name. When she raised hell to get him to take it down, he had the balls to ask why she didn't thank him. FAIL FAIL FAIL. Kathryn Cramer was also involved. And frankly, Elizabeth Bear gets a FAIL stamp too for saying that despite using online emotional violence to reinforce his white privilege, he's still a nice guy. Further details here on [livejournal.com profile] coffeeandink's journal.

- Why I Would Not Have Greenlit Dollhouse, or "why Jess couldn't stomach more than half an episode."

The universe cannot CONTAIN this fail. It's like the FAIL is expanding out through the universe.

I do not want to talk about Shetterly because science has not yet come up with a way for me to reach through my computer screen and hit him with sticks. And fuck, just how much can these people fail on every level?

Oh, thank God, you can't stand Dollhouse either! The brother-in-law and I are having a really tough time not cringing every time Echo is whored out or the entire godly fucking mess that was that second episode.

Why is there no 'punch user in face' button on my keyboard?

Yeah, I have huuuuge issues with the human trafficking and the exploitative context and the RAPE and, no. Major squick. Which is a shame, because the women are hot like fire.

My thoughts were similar when I caught an episode of Dollhouse the Sunday before last. It bothered me that they came up with a character who could not, by her concept, learn and grow. In fact, my 'hook' interest was, "Hey, your villain is kind of interesting. ...but I guess he won't be showing his head for a while. Damn."

THAT. Yes. There's no character to fall in love with because most of the characters are blank templates. No thank you.

What is UP with the outing of online writers' RL names??? FAIL!!
That much I can say without having followed the discussion in question.

Right? Man, that's just straight-out bullying.

I'm so glad now that I've never read anything by Shetterly or Bear; means I won't have to go through my shelves in order to get rid of their books.

And excellent essay on Dollhouse. The premise squicked me enough that I never started watching. From the sound of it-- right choice.

I feel dirty for having recc'ed Bear so hardcore for Blood and Iron. And yeah, Dollhouse just sounded like a nightmare to me, but I never got into Firefly until it was on DVD, so I thought maybe it was just me.

god that 'but XX is actually a nice person!" makes my blood boil. My Nana was a fantastic person, but she was also homophobic, the two things are not mutually exclusive. Her general awesomeness didn't mean she didn't have that to work on.

Yes, that's a perfect example. Man. Grandmom used to spout out some of the stupidest crap about race, but was open-minded about homosexuality. That didn't negate her being RACIST.

"but so and so is nice!" is so often "but so and so is nice TO ME, and therefore I will defend him despite him being outright nasty to YOU." I have no respect for people who save their bullying and ugliness for the Net, where they think it won't have consequences.

Actually, in [livejournal.com profile] coffeeandink's post, she asks for PoC writers, and at least one person has recced L.A. Banks's books. There may be more now since she's an excellent author

OOps, sorry robanybody! I figured I would delete since I was corrected :) I didn't realize it would attach to a previous entry that would be unrelated.....
