I think the Seer women hide who they are from the men of the family for safety reasons; these days, a husband can be divorced and a son can be estranged. The women don't trust that their secrets won't be sold out, endangering both them and the public.
...*does* Jeff have some kind of mystical strength that will manifest at need? *wink, wink*
