I am an answering machine.
Sep. 2nd, 2010 10:19 am1) Toph, A:tLA. I mean, holy hell. She's disabled, she's tiny, she's female, and she's such a complete hardass that she could be played by the Rock. She doesn't let the constraints of her society hold her back. She jokes about her blindness. She gets dirty. She gets tricky. She's smart and brave and wonderful, and I wish like hell I'd had her as a role model, growing up. She creates her own bending form, dammit. She wins.
2) Charlie Baltimore, from the Long Kiss Goodnight. OMG I LOVE THIS MOVIE SO HARD, IT CAN ONLY BE EXPRESSED IN CAPS. Um. She was my first model of badass behavior, a woman who fought like a Mama Bear and who was furious as hell. I wasn't sure if I wanted her or if I wanted to be her.
3) Zoe from Firefly. God, I had no confusion whatsoever about wanting her. *koff* Because yeah, she was gorgeous and terrifying, deadpan and strong and yet still definitely a woman. The way she grieves at the end of the Big Damn Movie, clearly hurting but just as clearly holding on for her people, inspires me on my own bad days.
4) Olivia Dunham, Fringe. I still haven't watched the last 3 eps of the season (I know right?) but I do know she's my favorite female on TV now. She's amazing, strong and feminine without losing her will to care and to help. I can't express how it felt to see her using a cane in early s2, like it was finally cool for me to do it, too. I love her adoration of her niece (hey, Losers crossover potential!) and her sense of deadpan humor. I love her sensible FBI clothes. Srsly.
5) My mom. Yeah, I know, but still: my mom. She was a hurricane in a powerchair. She terrorized neurologists who told her she couldn't see her own MRI; she had last rights 14 times. When she lost her vision in the first MS flare, she drove herself to the hospital by memory. (I didn't say she had much common sense.) She used to stand in the bathroom and howl "fuck, fuck, fuck!" to see if anybody would come running in, and she'd cackle when we did. She fought like hell for her clients as a rehab counselor. She refused to out the lesbians in her unit, because why should the army give a damn? Long story short, there's a reason that her gravestone reads Mother, Wife, Warrior, Women's Army Corps.
Runners up:
- Parker from Leverage. Another disabled badass!
- Prentiss from Criminal Minds.
- Garcia from Criminal Minds.

Date: 2010-09-02 03:10 pm (UTC)If you'll permit: that is one kick-ass inscription on your mother's gravestone. No one who sees it will go away without a glimpse of a remarkable person.
BTW: I see my new settings haven't got rid of the notorious repost options, but I'm on neither and will never crosspost a comment without explicit encouragement from the OP.

Date: 2010-09-02 03:53 pm (UTC)My mom was disabled and had to use one crutch to walk. One time she raised that crutch and threatened her BIL over his treatment of her sister. She was and will always be my inspiration to keep going.
I named my 2nd kidlet after Zoe from Firefly. Zoe Seyvanah Grace is five and already shows potential to be a very awesome woman.
