This has the best elements of Johnny Mnemonic and Blade Runner combined. I'm sure I said that before, but still-it's got that darkly glittering feel to it, with a "survivalist" culture that's just barely clawed it's way back from oblivion. Have you ever read anything by Wilhemina Baird, her cyberpunkish science fiction series that starts with...think it's Crashcourse?

The more you write, the more the interdependence of the Retrievers and the Librarians becomes obvious. It's not just the Retrievers needing to be looked after, soothed from their rages, given information and so on-the Librarians desperately need something physical to ground *them*, too. I've never been attracted to bloodplay or cutting fics much, but I can see the reasons Jensen does it, and for the corset-something physically painful or uncomfortable to focus on. If it weren't too distracting, keeping in closer mental contact with Jeff would probably be good for him...they both SO need to fuck, already. Though you're doing a great job with the UST...

One of these days, Jeff's gonna snap. I know he is because 1) who could resist Jensen, especially since he basically OWNS him and 2)I think it was Blood-dimmed Tide that said he thought about fucking Jensen long before he did it. So...one of these days...

I'm vastly curious as to what happened with each of their previous partners. I think Jeff's must have catted around on him, maybe? I dunno, I just got that impression. And Jensen's left him in the Uplink too long-why would he do that? *frowns*

I think it's intriguing that you'd have the Retrievers be necessary but very feared; and the Librarians necessary but held in contempt as whores. Well, they basically are-but they're just as important to the community's survival and they, at least, don't seem to have had any choice in the matter. So Retrievers are volunteers for a program and Librarians are taken when infants, due to the high "failure" (aka DEATH) rate? I'm having flashbacks to the Stepford Wives and Westworld, here, for some reason! *cringes*

I read this and thought, that's it, the geisha book for you! And I sent it, impulsive freak that I am, and then thought, ahh...maybe you already have it? I recc'd it to you back when you started this series. If so, pass it along to a good home, because I'd rather share it than return it, it's one of my favs. If not, I think you'll find it fascinating, both because it's a beautiful, informative book; and because certain aspects really resonate with this series. The whole being offered up on a plate as a placatory sex offering, for one thing, and the being revered yet sneered at, for another.

Now y'all just need to find some way to film this. *waits*
