The Hellion’s Waltz by Olivia Waite is $1.99! This is part of the Feminine Pursuits series. Carrie read this one and gave it a B-:

I never thought I’d say this, but The Hellion’s Waltz is just too darn nice. This historical f/f romance is beautifully written and full of kind, courageous, intelligent characters. It is also boring. Gouda Friends by Cathy Yardley is $1.99 at Amazon! If you’ve listed to literally any podcast episode I’ve been on with Sarah, you probably know I love cheese and I’m just tickled by the heroine’s dedication to dairy. This seems like a fluffy, small town romance that’s light on angst.

It’s not a crime to steal a heart…

Hench

RECOMMENDED: Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots is $1.99! Sarah reviewed this one and gave it an A:

In reading and then re-reading this book, I’ve discovered so many more layers, hidden parallels, and very clever dissections of the fictional world of the characters and of the actual reality that this book resides within. I read this story a few years ago, although it may have been published a few years before I read it. It was a later book in a series. I think the series at least in part followed a group of sisters. One thing that happens in the background in an earlier book in the series is that the sister’s parents reconcile after an extended estrangement. In this book the heroine says (probably to the hero) that she is happy that her parents are back together except that she keeps walking in on her parents having sex in various rooms of the house. She says that she is considering walking around carrying a bell to give her parents some advance warning of her approach.

The book is a historical romance set in 19th century England. I don’t recall what part of that century. I remember checking a couple of Lorraine Heath’s books when I was looking for this one.

As I write this, I’ve just come back from a nice little bike ride around my neighbourhood. I got sweaty, went fast, climbed a few little hills, descended a few little hills, waited my turn at traffic lights and 4-way stops (you’re welcome), and nearly got hit by two different drivers who were each doing something illegal.

Ah, exercise in North America. So glamorous, so safe, so encouraged.

Anyway, cycling is the second sport I have picked up since I accidentally discovered that I enjoy INTENSITY and GOING FAST. It is the second sport I have picked up since I accidentally discovered that I don’t care if I’m the only fat person at the group ride, I’M HERE TO RIDE. It is the second sport I have picked up since I accidentally discovered that exercise, when you remove all the crusty old baggage about it being a Moral Obligation and a Means to Weight Loss (it usually isn’t, and focusing on that ruins the fun), is something I not only need in some abstract sense, but something I crave in a very visceral, very obvious way.

It makes me feel better physically, it both excites me and calms me down, it cheers me up, it puts a bright spot of play into my day, and it emotionally regulates me in a way that not even therapy could. It’s also just pure joy, pure pleasure, pure fun. I think that gets lost when we live in a culture that alienates us from movement and from our own bodies.

As a kid, I never thought of myself as “athletic” because I did not participate in any formal sports, but looking back, there were signs. I loved tumbling in the yard, playing on the playground, throwing a ball around, bouncing on a trampoline, riding a bike or skateboard, and all kinds of games. I did not enjoy things I found boring: lap swimming, ballet, baseball, football, running a mile or whatever we were assigned to do in gym class, but I still found ways to run around and exhaust myself by having fun, at least until my mid-teens.

By then, so many pressures around body image had developed that made me too self-conscious to use my body for any physical activity, especially in public, and I became not only hopelessly neurotic about my weight and appearance, but also dolefully depressed. No wonder.

As a young adult, I only engaged in exercise for the purpose of trying to lose weight, and frankly, it sucked. There were moments of joy, which surprised me, and moments of discovering some hidden strength or natural ability, which also surprised me, but all of these were overshadowed by The Agenda to burn calories and lose weight. Which meant that, even for activities that I enjoyed, like karate or riding a bike, I applied myself to them with a rigidity and drivenness that precluded all flexibility, all self-compassion, and all joy. And when the diet fell apart, as it inevitably would, so did my relationship with exercise.

I spent the next decade or so only engaging in incidental movement, essentially giving myself permission to not do any intentional exercise. (I once mentioned that on here, and a few commenters were SO MAD about that.) I was lucky to live in a city with decent public transit, and I don’t drive, which meant that I got a fair bit of walking in, which kept me strong and mobile even when I had no desire to do it. This was uncomfortable at times, but because it had nothing to do with trying to lose weight, it was psychologically neutral. I didn’t exactly enjoy it, but I didn’t always hate it either. The most I could muster was a mild resentment.

About seven years in, I started not just taking transit and walking partway to work, but walking all the way to work, a mile each way. For the first time, I noticed that I enjoyed the physical sensations of getting my heart revved up, feeling a bit warm and even sweaty, and the exhilaration of breathing hard. I was only able to start enjoying these sensations once I’d practiced, repeatedly, taking away the reflexive judgment I’d learned to attach to them, like believing that breathing hard meant I was “unfit” and something was wrong with me, or that showing any kind of exertion in public must be a mortifying event because I was fat and everyone would notice. Some people did notice, and did comment that I was sweating, and I was able to calmly explain that I’d been walking briskly. On purpose. For exercise. This was very effective at both silencing them and making them look a bit silly, which I admit, I enjoyed.

Instead of feeling bad, I reminded myself (over and over) that of course your heart rate goes up when you exercise, and that’s what it’s supposed to do, and of course you feel warmer as you move faster, and of course you sweat to cool yourself down, and of course you breathe harder to get oxygen into your bloodstream and to your cells, because that’s what exercise is supposed to do. No matter how much or little exertion it takes to get these sensations, getting to them is basically the point. You can also choose to go slow and not push it, and just enjoy fresh air and stretching your legs, of course, but on days when you want to push a little harder or faster to challenge yourself, your body showing signs of exertion is exactly what should happen. Feeling challenged is literally the only way to increase your fitness. It does not mean something is “wrong” with you.

A few years after that, I started working from home and no longer had to walk much at all. I went through a phase of grief and sat down a lot, and I lost some mobility (and also gained some weight.) The urge to panic was strong, but I held fast to my values, and asked myself what I was truly worried about. Was it really the weight gain, or something else?

In thinking it over, it was mostly fear about the loss of strength and mobility, since I knew my life would get harder. I thought about it some more, and realized the best way for me* to improve my mobility was to…use it. To practice walking. To practice walking in sand, or up hills, or even up my arch-nemesis, stairs. Maybe I’d lose the weight I’d gained and maybe I wouldn’t, but either way, I would be more mobile and less afraid. So I bought some comfy walking clothes, and for the first time since childhood, I attempted to go for walks purely for recreation. I had to remind myself over and over not to monitor my heart rate, not to shoot for any “fat burning zone,” and not to count the minutes or create elaborate fitness routines in my head, but to focus instead on my internal sensations, on doing whatever felt good that day, on the trees, the sky, the dogs, the fresh air and the scenery around me. I did that enough that I started to get faster and feel better, even before my weight did anything. Eventually, over the next five years, it gradually settled back into my old (fat) baseline, without me forcing it to do anything at all.

*this is not true for everyone; see: CFS/ME, certain chronic pain or autoimmune conditions that you can’t exercise your way out of, and which require medical treatment first

I continued walking, for fun, for mental health (because at some point, my therapist pointed out how great it feels to walk when angry, to get all those stompy feelings out, which was an amazing revelation to me), and to enjoy the scenery, and even to enjoy the warm, sweaty exertion of it. I had a solid walking habit between 2011-2018, and I took a walk around lunchtime basically every day.

I always offered myself the chance to go, without forcing myself to go, usually by putting on my shoes and coat and stepping outside for some reason, to take out the recycling or just to check the weather. Then I got to decide whether I felt like going for a walk that day or not. I had full permission to turn around and come back inside if I wasn’t feeling it, but usually I was feeling it.

I started to anticipate my lunch break like a wiggly dog looks forward to the park. Each day, I had permission to walk briefly, for maybe five minutes around the block, to walk slow or fast, or not at all, or to walk farther, for a bigger neighbourhood loop that took 45-60 minutes, if I wanted to. Sometimes I did. Sometimes I walked for five minutes. Each time, I felt good afterward. If I took a rest day and went back inside, I felt good about that, too. I practiced making the right choice for that day. I was flexible.

I inhaled this audiobook. I recommended it to a friend when I was about 15% in – risky, I know – and then I reinforced that recommendation a few times as I continued listening. I think she wanted me to calm down.

Homemaker is as much a mystery as it is about the cost of being in a marriage that functions like a shrinking cage, with the key held by an emotionally immature man. It’s a whodunit with big stakes (a woman from their community is missing, and her family and her friends are scared and devastated) and it’s Prairie’s ability to notice important details in the minutiae of the lives around her, lives that used to be much more similar to her own, that lead her into amateur sleuthing. Some folks call her nosy, but Prairie thinks of it as extremely attentive pattern recognition. Her narration is snarky and funny, but also poignant and sometimes bleak.

The clearest way to explain the tone of this book: at one point Prairie thinks about how there were “too many…eulogies for women’s potential.” On page 2, she muses, “She could have approval, or she could live free and do what she liked.” Prairie is a divorced, middle-aged mom of two girls, and has been shunned by the other moms who used to be her social circle for both exposing a locally beloved ob/gyn and for having the audacity of divorcing a “good one.” At one point Prairie explains that she knows why she’s been shunned, but it’s no less painful for her knowing the reason. She’s tenacious and determined, and will push past firm social boundaries to access information. This information helps make what’s happening around her make sense, though the method of acquiring it causes more fractures in her social connections. I liked Prairie, especially her perspective on the community she lives in and her critiques of that same community and its social rules, and I could see why she annoyed the people around her so much.

Homemaker is extremely, vibrantly feminist, though Prairie is not so much angry all the time (she is sometimes) as she is fed up and unafraid to point out all of the ways that women’s perceptions, labor, and accomplishments are devalued – unless that women’s work makes the man in her life look good to other people. Meanwhile, Prairie’s perception, labor, and ability to notice the right details and ask the right questions make her very, very good at sleuthing. And also the part where she’s kind of fearless about social boundaries: if they’re in the way, she doesn’t pay much attention to them.

Mild spoilers inside

Readers who struggle with a character being embarrassed or shamed may struggle a bit with this element of the story, but I found that Prairie’s relentless reinforcement of her own empathy and morality, even when she makes mistakes, lessened the feelings of secondhand embarrassment for me.

There is a light romance in addition to the mystery, and it’s very sweet and emotionally nuanced. Prairie has barely re-entered the dating world, and is as methodical and organized about dating as she is with everyone else. Generally, advanced emotional awareness and emotional regulation govern so much of what Prairie does, and it’s a pleasure to listen to her whether she’s casually interviewing someone or having a date that might not be a date (but maybe it is)?

Speaking of listening – this book is in first person, past tense. Second, the story is set in Green Bay, and the narrator does a very good job differentiating between many different women’s voices, some with more Wisconsin accents than others. OH! – and there’s some MLM drama, too, for those of you who love that, and you’ll definitely guess the company that inspired the MLM. The surrounding characters are fascinating with lives and interests of their own, too.

I really can’t say much more about this book without giving too much away, especially because the contrasts that develop between Prairie’s worldview and that of the women around her are deepened the more she discovers what might be happening. I figured out the ending and how the murder was done, but I was past 50% when the penny dropped, so to speak. Some of the more cringe-worthy moments made my stomach hurt, and Prairie’s unshakable belief in her version of what’s happening sometimes came across as arrogant, especially when I could see the social car crash about to happen. But again – Prairie can have approval, or she can have freedom to do what she likes. I have to respect that attitude. I think this is going to be a terrific series, and am extremely eager for the next one.

Finders Keepers

I picked this book up only because I loved Adler’s second book, Happy Medium. (I haven’t read her first yet) For this book, I didn’t feel particularly moved by the blurb. I wasn’t interested in anything to do with a treasure hunt and second chance romance is usually a turn off for me. Yet I still picked this book up and I am so very glad I did. This ended up being a Bad Decisions Book Club for me and an easy A.

Nina’s life fell to bits. Her promised permanent position at a college in Boston didn’t materialise and so she’s unemployed. She breaks up with her boyfriend because she realises that he doesn’t actually love her and she doesn’t have a place to stay because she was due to move in with her boyfriend and had given up the lease on her own place. So she ends up back home in a small town in Maryland living in her childhood bedroom. Nina is rudderless and so so lost.

But so is her childhood neighbour. Quentin had been living in Paris with his fiancee when his life imploded, so he’s back home as well, living on the other side of the duplex Nina’s parents live in. Nina and Quentin’s bedrooms share a wall and have windows very close together. Nina and Quentin haven’t spoken in 17 years until they are reunited by these circumstances. They had been the closest of friends, until things went wrong in their teens and Quentin moved away and cut contact with Nina.

Quentin and Nina start talking again tentatively, but there are so many hurt feelings to navigate. The conversations are fraught. Quentin suggests that they restart the treasure hunt they began as teens. Incidentally, it’s also the reason that their friendship ended. Drawn to each other, they nonetheless decide to go ahead with it, even if only for the monetary reward that Quentin says is still available.

The treasure hunt was set up by an eccentric seltzer magnate in the 1930s and no one had solved it in the intervening 100-odd years. As far as the treasure hunt goes, I enjoyed the clues and the process Quentin and Nina go through to try and solve it. There are hijinks and searches and library time. All very enjoyable to read about.

But if you guessed that the real gold lay in the emotional archeology they engage in, then you’d be right. Very slowly, they extend olive branches towards each other. It’s not all smooth reconnection, though. There are bumps in their road back to each other, but inexorably they move closer together, slowly like two magnets entrapped in the mud of the past, nonetheless drawn to each other. The emotions are so rich and full and real that it makes for a very fulfilling read.

There is a bleak moment in this book that a) really works and b) totally surprised me. I was sure this was going to be one of those books that just cruised towards a HEA, but things fall apart for our heroes in a surprising way.

I also really enjoyed reading about characters comfortably in their 30s. They’ve lived full lives and bring a lot to the table in terms of experience. Nina, in particular though, is lost. With her career on the rocks, she’s not at all sure what she should be doing next. She feels like a tremendous failure returning to her parents with her tail between her legs. She thought she was better than this small town, but the town surprises her with the ways in which it has changed.

The writing in this book is also really immersive and easy to get lost in. So often there would be sections that would make me gasp with delight because they were written so well. This is just one of them:

Just because we’ve made a deal to continue our search for Fountain’s treasure doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten what happened. It just means I’m willing to bury it back down in the deep, dark underbrush of my heart where it dwelled quite contently before Quentin’s sudden reappearance so rudely flushed it out from its hiding place.

Why is this book an A for me? First, for the myriad reasons I mention above. But also because I stayed up LATE reading this thing. I kept fighting sleep to try and get just one more page read. For context, my baby is now only waking once at night (okay, sometimes twice) so there was definitely the potential for me to get some good rest, but no! While she slumbered peacefully, I read voraciously. I would also periodically slam the book down on the bed and exclaim to my partner that this was Such a Good Book. I did this a number of times. These are my indicators that a book is something special. I heartily recommend this book to the Bitchery – it’s excellent!

There’s only one non-fiction title this time. That’s practically unheard of with Get Rec’d. There’s also a graphic novel, another romance author dabbling in mystery, and a historical romance with a bit of a twist. Can’t wait to hear what people think of that one in particular.

I discovered this book while looking at something related to historical romances and I just had to mention it to the Bitchery. It’s a Regency romance where the main couple are otter shifters.

The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang is $1.99! I will warn that this fantasy novel is very graphic; please check triggers. This was Kuang’s debut and it sold really well.
