we're continuing our Dungeon of the Mad Mage game into a homebrew high-level campaign about a diplomatic mission to a newly risen island nation called Arvandor, which means I'm continuing with my Oath of Vengeance paladin himbo Rhys. today's song that reminds me of him:
Rhys is an interesting case of the question of what happens when a vengeance paladin kills the person that they swore their oath against. his vengeance was aimed at his twin sister Maeve, who he had an obsessively codependent relationship with as they grew up together alone in the Feywild. when he ran away to join a pirate crew, she became murderously jealous that he decided to play with anyone but her. she found him on the open ocean and murdered his entire crew in front of him, including the young cabin boy. then she sent him back to the Feywild to wait for her to return so they could be together again. Rhys managed to get back to the material realm, but not until after two years had passed in the Feywild and seventeen years had passed in the material realm because time in the Feywild is tricky. he lost everyone he cared about, including the sister he thought he knew.
a few years passed. Rhys found another group of friends, his new party, and got very attached to them. then Maeve found him again in the dungeon of Hallister. he was angry with her, but mostly he knew he had to kill her because she was never going to stop hunting him and the people he loved. he fought and eventually killed her, and she died in his arms. he's doing absolutely great with the fact that he murdered his only family, thank you for asking, he's definitely not punishing himself by getting into fights and tanking enormous amounts of damage without telling people he needs to be healed. he's fine.
anyway, the question of what a vengeance paladin does when he has nothing left to avenge: he decides to swear vengeance against anyone who hurts his new friends / family. the artificer is being hunted by the Cult of the Dragon, and he's decided to kill them all so that his friend can finally be free. he's pretty sure the other two party members also have people who hurt them, and he's ready to add those people to his murder list. this is a great coping method. if he's made himself a weapon because of the scars Maeve left on him, he will be THEIR weapon.
