I realized while browsing Tumblr the other day that I've been the absolute scum of various fandoms in various ways since I started writing Gargoyles fanfic in 1995 at the ripe old age of 13.

Mary Sues paired with various cartoon characters? Done 'em. Slash in various macho fandoms like Metallica and pro wrestling? Yeah, that's where I met my wife. RPS? Boy howdy, let me show you my etchings. Non-con and incest? Bitch, please, just look at my AO3. Which just means that when there are posts on Tumblr about how those gross old fandom hags are ruining fandom with their unapologetically fucked up (but well tagged!) fic and their daring to exist in public, stuff that would've genuinely bothered me at one point, now just kind of makes me go "o sweet summer child, my bad taste is probably older than you are."

Being an old fandom hag is sometimes tiring and sometimes kind of awesome.

it's sometimes hard to be zen about the stupidities spouted by the young'uns - I honestly don't understand the attitude that they (with their limited years in existence and even fewer in fandom) should dictate how everyone else fans.

Dowager Queens of Fandom should get to wear turbans & carry lorgnettes, and possibly be carried about in litters by the strong, comely parties of their choice.

I don't recognize fandom much any more, going by the tags at A03. It's mostly "what the hey is that?" and "can you please tag properly?!" It's supposed to be fun, and it hasn't been much fun for me in years-and I'm not even a writer who gets flak. I still read, but don't engage much.

Y'know, your list up there makes me want to go paw through your fics again. :D

Snort. There's a reason I had a tag on tumblr that read "In fandom years I'm dead."

Like, I seriously just don't understand this mindset? At all? What are we supposed to do when we turn 25? Just... all take up crochet and bitch about nothing but our husbands? Yeah, I got the crochet down but I like my wife and my skeleton porn, thanks. The various trends fandom goes through sometimes is just mind blowing.

Of course, I was on the internet when the rule of thumb was "don't give out your real name." I look at every attempt by websites to get me to use my real name/identity to login like they are insane. No, I don't want to use my Facebook account which requires my REAL NAME to log into this fandom site full of pictures of characters doing highly questionable sexual acts. No, Google, I don't want you to be able to link my frankly bizarre video watching habits to my real name. So yeah, not much difference in that I'm usually left going "WTF people" at the end.

Oh my god, right??? When Google asks me if I want to link my real name to ANYTHING online, it's like "... no?" Please just let me keep my weird browsing habits to myself. Nobody in my RL wants to know about my new kink for a shapely sacrum. I grew up in the days of internet stranger danger and being paranoid that anybody you talked to online was a potential murderer, and now fankids are like, "you have to put your age, sexual orientation and whether you're a survivor of sexual assault or we'll harass you over your ships." Man, c'mon, I watched too many earnest 90s public safety announcements about the big scary Internet predators, fuck off.

So yeah, big mood on everything you're saying.
