Non-conformity in a very conformative group *can* be extremely alienating! Class differences are just as pernicious a problem as any other -ism, but less recognized as such. There's a real and deep divide between intellectuals and non, too-contempt in many cases on the one part, and suspicion on the other.
Add to that the masculine tendency to not talk about things, anyway, and there you go.
