Yeah, Murphy. She may improve upon acquaintance, I'll have to see. I just get annoyed at being *told* a character is strong because she acts bitchy, so I should like her. *Show* me she's strong. There's plot issues, too, but maybe it's because he was a newer writer then. I'm still planning on giving them another try, eventually. Too many people that I know like them to disregard their recs.
Tanya Huff is like a better Mercedes Lackey. They write the same kind of stuff, but Tanya plots/writes better-less weeping/prolonged, unresolved plots that drag until you want to kick the characters' asses, etc. IMO, heh.
My favorite of her books is The Fire's Stone, even if it does have too much crying. It still ends up in an intriguing domestic arrangement. \o/
But...timeless lit? Nah. Fun stuff, especially her 'Summoning' series, and she does come up with interesting situations, even if the execution might not be what I'd hope for. Is that damning with faint praise? *laughs*
