Dude, yeah, that's definitely part of it. But I also kinda think it makes sense. Sam would do good with a woman he felt like he couldn't break, an anti-Jessica with dark hair and hips and belly and glasses who majored in astrophysics or something. (And no, I totally didn't have a Sam/OFC plotbunny with a large and in charge nerdy professional skeptic, ala Ghosthunters.) And Dean NEEDS a woman who properly appreciates food.
