Mar. 9th, 2009 04:35 pmJust spend several hours catching up on RaceFail '09. My head is spinning, but I have links:
An apology from Sarah Monette. "I personally do not want people of color to feel unwelcome, excluded, alienated, or silenced, and I am sorry as all hell that they are being made to feel that way."
Recs for books written by POC
Big List of Awesome Authors, Poets, Playwrights and Scholars
Cultural Appropriation 101. "You can avoid dealing with issues of appropriation by being thoughtless. There is no other way."
"Police have moved to shut down the small store, an action author Will Shetterly has described as "class-based warfare in its purest form, aiming to destroy honest poor people with the only true form of prejudice, classism." He then demanded an apology for not throwing a brick through coffeeandink's window a second time." *spittake*
Stones on my chest. "Every friend who truly seeks to understand why and how we shape the world with our desires/the world shapes our desires/white men have become the only worthy objects of desire lifts a stone."
You fucking fail, Scalzi. "Well, Mister Scalzi, it’s your genre they’re talking about. That nice, white, male-dominated genre which has served you so very well and given you a tidy income. You don’t think the continued and deliberate exclusion of diverse voices - in other words, women, black people, non-white people, people who are gay, people who are not like you - is anything you should have a view about? And you wanted to be president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America?"
Niceness: highly overrated. "I'm tired of nice people, and I don't really give a damn about whether or not I or anybody else is nice enough to appeal their egos beccause there's not a single documented example of "nice" changing racist actions. Nobody ever won social justice by being nice."
