Eeee!

My coworker's son bought a rat about two weeks ago. His mom freaked, threatened to kill rat. I stepped in all aflail and offered to save rat. Rat had babies (MAMA RAT) and it seemed that all would be okay, because the rats went back to the petstore.

Whew! Off the hook.

... Except two days later, Coworker's Kid had a new pretty rat for Mom to threaten to kill. Again.

Long story short:

This is Mercy. My coworker left her in a car with the windows rolled down, after keeping her in a garage for about a week with little contact. They had down pine chips (argh, respiratory issues!) and hamster food (not quite enough for a growing rat baby), so we had to leave her at home and run off to get new digs and noms for her.

She is very shy so far, but pretty and sweet-natured. She was curious about the cage cleaning, and chased our hands, and did an excited wee rat dance when I gently tossed some cage carpet at her. She's letting T pet her and pick her up, already!

She is not quite ready for her close-up.

Awww. I can't see the pics of the new baby...

So sweet of you to take her.

::COOS::

Baby!

(and ARGH to coworker. Leaving pets in cars/garages is NOT OKAY.)

Awwwww!

Hamsters are much more likely to bite than rats! I don't think people realize that domestic rats and wild rats are completely different species and have totally different personalities.

Sounds like your coworkers son *really* wanted a rat! Poor kid... he should really learn no means no though. It was really nice of you to offer to take them on... and boy is she a cutie! Love the last piccy, hehe

Awwww.

Are pine chips good for anything? You're certainly not supposed to keep snakes on them, and whenever I'm buying my girl a new toy or hide I have to check what kind of wood it is. A lady at, um, a birching workshop said most evergreens are a bit toxic. Surprises me they're still sold.

We had one that looked just like that, her name was Jewel. She was very shy, liked Pupson, but her bestest love was her cage buddy/sister Curry.
Now I'm back to wanting a rat again, darn it.

*twirls* Oh honey congratulations! While the reason for her getting to you are less than stellar *eyes rat threatening coworker* I'm ridiculously happy for you, T, Mercy, and the rest of the crew!!! She is such a little sweetheart. Awwww lookit her paws and that last picture is absolutely darling XD

...um yeah. Can you tell I like the rat babies? ;)

I thought about getting a rat as a pet. Apparently they're fantastic pets! I decided it would be a bad idea to get any animals until AFTER I moved to NY and saw how big my apartment would be.

ehhh. i love rats. i had two before i had to move cross country and give them up. i can't believe they isolated her for a week. poor highly social baby.

why the hell did the dad buy a rat twice if the mom obviously hates them and wants to kill them?
