I'm going to try to get to fb today. But man: RIP, George Carlin. I hope you're tearing it up with Richard Pryor right now.

I'm Looking Through You: Growing Up Haunted, Jennifer Boylan.

This book wasn't what I expected. When I picked it up, I had no idea the author was a mtf transperson who had previously written about transitioning; I thought the book was just about a kid in a haunted house. But apparently, I really needed to read about the youth and the haunting of a young transperson, because I finished this book so deeply satisfied that it was like a sigh of relief. A glass of iced tea on a hot day. Refreshing.

Boylan approaches the supernatural with such frankness, letting it be spooky and poignant. She draws parallels between spirits and the two-spirit nature of her mind fighting her body, the loss of her father and her sister in differing ways and the loss of her innocence. When Boylan describes making a ghost of herself to hide what was "wrong" with her, it broke my heart and made me go yes, all at once. God, and her story about searching her house with dowsing rods and a psychic, her skeptical mind dissecting the experience even as she yearns for the "presence" to be her father... yes, I got wibbly. I dare you not to wibble a few times if you read it.

In conclusion: read it with an open mind and you'll definitely be rewarded.

Next up, Perfect Girls and Starving Daughters and Melusine.

Wow, sounds like an awesome book. Oh and if Melusine is the book I think it is, it's a good read. I'm a little in love with Mildmay. *g*
