I want to start reading the Dresden books as soon as I finally finish my final paper. Could you tell me what's the name of the first book so I start from the beginning?

And how old is Dresden in the books and on the tv show?

I don't recall right now if Butcher ever explicitly calls out how old Harry is, but I believe he's in his early thirties in the books. I could be utterly wrong about that.

I don't think it's ever specified exactly, but I always got the feeling (from my very bad arithmetic about what's mentioned of his teen years and how much time has passed) that he was around 28 in the first book. Just based on Michael's kids' ages, the latest volume has to be almost ten years later. Harry mentions several times though, that wizards age slower than normal humans...

I'm about halfway through, but I wanna see a crossover too!

OMG, I've been reading them forever. I didn't know YOU read them! And I actually, indirectly, got into fandom through Butcher's mailing list. That was where I found out another author I was into wrote fanfic and I went looking for it. It was all downhill from there.

I quit the mailing list, though, because it was just TOO MUCH EMAIL to deal with on a daily basis. *sighs* I miss it, tho.

See, my immediate response was 'YOU are!', because that's what tends to happen when you bring these things up.

I've read the first 3 books. I thought they were pretty good, but I remember being annoyed at this one character that I know I'm probably supposed to like. (I'm contrary that way. *coughs*) Everybody keeps telling me they get better as the series goes along-it's not like they were *bad* or anything-and I was startled to see how many books there *are* now when I passed by the display in Borders the other day. Butcher's been busy!

Have you read Tanya Huff's "Blood" series? There's a few good SPN/Blood Ties fics out there, with Dean and Henry.

FYI-I'm going to be sending you 2 some books/dvd's soon that I hope will be inspirational for your writing (as well as enjoyable, right). They're all either gender-fuckery, apocafiction, or mind-control stuff and will also hopefully be new to you.

Can I ask which character pissed you off? Was it Murphy? Because, um, she's kind of an acquired taste, I'll admit.

I read the first Blood book, was not impressed. I've been told the later ones are better.

Yeah, Murphy. She may improve upon acquaintance, I'll have to see. I just get annoyed at being *told* a character is strong because she acts bitchy, so I should like her. *Show* me she's strong. There's plot issues, too, but maybe it's because he was a newer writer then. I'm still planning on giving them another try, eventually. Too many people that I know like them to disregard their recs.

Tanya Huff is like a better Mercedes Lackey. They write the same kind of stuff, but Tanya plots/writes better-less weeping/prolonged, unresolved plots that drag until you want to kick the characters' asses, etc. IMO, heh.

My favorite of her books is The Fire's Stone, even if it does have too much crying. It still ends up in an intriguing domestic arrangement. \o/

But...timeless lit? Nah. Fun stuff, especially her 'Summoning' series, and she does come up with interesting situations, even if the execution might not be what I'd hope for. Is that damning with faint praise? *laughs*

I hope you don't mind a comment that has nothing to do with your question ... I've recently become addicted to fanmixes and I'd like to put together my own. Given my warped sense of humor, I am compiling a list of songs that have made me laugh out loud (like "Stairway to Gilligan's Island"), and I seem to remember you reccing a hilarious song at some point in the distant past ... does this ring a bell? Or am I hallucinating? I can't remember the name of the song or who performed it, but I'd love to include it in the mix if by chance you recall it? Or, heck, if you have any to rec, I'd be happy to listen to those as well ...

I really want to read the books, but I've heard that they are kind of misogynistic so I never did because I didn't want to fall in love and end up angry at the same time.

Hm. Okay. I think, if you can handle the SPN 'verse in terms of sexism? You can take the Dresden books. The main character IS a chauvanist, but it also comes back to bite him, as most of the powerful players in the books are female. Many of them appear to be helpless. And he's a chauvanist in that "must protect damsel in distress!" way, not in any malicious way.

Also, the coolest character in the book is probably his police liason, Murphy, a 5'0 thin woman who ends up being a Big Damn Hero in the Joss sense of the word. I (heart) Murphy.

Also, unlike LKH? Butcher gets better over time. So the main gender issues I had with the books are gone by book 4-ish, if you can get that far. Which, y'know, YMMV as to whether it's worth it.

Oh ok. Since I don't at all see SPN as sexist I guess the books wont bother me. Guess I know what I'll be doing once finals are over and I have free time again.

Okay, cool. I figured SPN was my best reference as to sexist; some people see it, some don't. I personally think Dresden Files is pretty non-sexist, particularly since it's written by a guy, but I know some people who see it.

I need to get that book, just not in hard cover. I have been dying for an SPN/Dresden Files crossover for ages. (I've also been waiting a lifetime for an SPN/Evil Dead crossover, but that's never going to happen. Sigh.)

Have you ever read any books by Rob Thurman? She's got a series out that I'd swear was influenced by SPN, and it's riveting and really scary in places. I love it to an insane degree.
