I was surprised at the claim that male authors rarely write about their cats or are photographed with their cats, because when I think of "author photographed with cat" I think "Ernest Hemingway", and when I think of "cat stories" I think of "Best Cat Stories" which has Lloyd Alexander and James Herriot and whatnot. But I haven't done any statistics, so it's quite possible my experience is skewed.
The tattoo article made me quite amused to think of my father forbidding me to do ANYTHING - when my sister said about my tattoo, "Don't tell until you've already done it," she was referring to my MOTHER. That's the way it's always been; Mom nags us to do things her way, Dad stays out of it. But then, I've come to realize that ideas of masculinity have very little to do with the men in my family.
