The brothers are arch-angels. But are they ... avatars of Michael and Gabriel ... or incarnate manifestations ... or reflections ... or literally the two made human flesh...?

Sam and Dean are... complicated. *grin* They're not the two made human flesh. They're not literally angelic; they are wholly, frustratingly mortal. What Andrew was referring to was more what they could be than what they currently are.

As for what Andrew is, and what cosmology we're going with, it's more in line with the Minnesota Valhalla and the mingling pantheons there. America as a spiritual/cultural melting pot has influenced the Powers That Be to the point that boundaries aren't as clear as they once were. And, well, there's a bit of Dogma (the film) going on, in that "none of the religions have gotten it right", but they've all got a pretty good idea.
