I think that may be my favorite metaphor for Sam, Dean and John ever. And I'm glad the sort of "presence in absence" you mentioned works, because we were aiming for that. Dean is so much the mediator in that family when Sam and John are together, and Sam and John are still occasionally falling back into the pre-crash dynamics of *snipe, snipe, bicker* without anyone there to make them knock it off.
