Okay so this part was very much in the vein of everything we know about Sam. I can really see him sending Dean away the first time because he didn't want anything to interfear in his new life.
To me Sam's very selfish this way, which isn't to say he's a bad person. Sam was always protected and given his way, so when Dean actually asks something of him that he doesn't want he goes back into that mode. You can actually see it in the series quite a bit especially in Scarecrow. But then again you see in the very next ep that the brother's would do anything for one another and you show this as well.
