Ah, thanks for the explanations. I just read Chap 12, and that went a long way to explaining some of this stuff, too (e.g. the nature of his amnesia, if his newfound coldbloodedness is an intentional change in his personality, etc). I'm just gonna sit back and trust you guys, OK? :)
