- Depression-proofing your home: This is less about suicide prevention than about how to maximize your space for comfort, light and easy maintenance.
- Approximate directions to a burial: A son remembers his father's death. "My father’s mortician was a careless barber. Stepping up to the open casket, I realized too much had been taken off the beard."
- He who casts the first stone: Swinger parties in Texas are protested by Christian fringe groups. Scary and rage-inducing story about the threats faced by non-traditional couples.
- Sometimes being rude is the acceptable response: "When we engage in reasoned debate we, by inference, present our opponent as having a position due some level of respect."
- Five fallacies that medical TV shows use all the time that have never happened to me: "I find that doctors *hate* difficult-to-diagnose patients, and tend to label them with emotional problems faster than your head can spin."
- Chronicles of mansplaining: Professor feminism and the deleted comments of doom: "It’s not just random dudes going “THAT’S NOT SEXIST,” as they do every time a woman says the word “sexism” in relation to anything. It’s a dude appropriating feminism in order to silence women who identify things as sexist."
- Why I didn't just call the cops: Trigger warning for sexual assault and its dismissal by critics. "Formally report or you have no right to complain... Like it's that easy."

Can you tell I have months worth of linkspam on my bookmarks?

- Problem patients, problem meds: "Sending a patient out the door with just a prescription is not treatment."
- Meltdown: "It usually takes a week of traveling with (my father) before I’m seized by the tantrum-pitching impulse and can barely resist the urge to punch myself again and again in the face." Trigger warning for cancer. The picture that opens the piece is particularly hilarious, though.
- Eating your cultural vegetables: "Though Lyra doesn’t get the jokes, she understands the rhythm of jokes, and so when she hears that rhythm, she laughs, knowingly, in a manner that tugs at my heart — and feels more than a little familiar."
- Modern family: I feel like I saw this poly family in a documentary once. They're still awesome in print.
- Atlas stretched: who is John Galt and why is he on Luluman bags?: "If you’ve ever wandered into a Lululemon store or perused the website of this purveyor of ultra-hip “yoga-inspired” athletic apparel, you may have noticed that the company is not trying to sell merely a pair of buttocks-compressing pants but a worldview."
- Ghost rider: "It was senior year, and I’d spent most of it having panic attacks at his house, sitting on a waterbed and trying to remember to move the oxygen through my body."
- Why I'm climbing back aboard the mood stabilizer train: "There's a reason the flight attendants tell you to put on your own oxygen mask before assisting others. It's because you can't do jack to help people if you're running out of air yourself." I heart Marianne Kirby.
nilchance: Picture of a pomegranate with spilled seeds, text "I think you're confused, I'm not Persephone" (rainbow eyeshadow)
- Meds compliance and the problem clinician: "The biggest obstacle to patients staying on their meds is doctors who don't listen."
- Being mentally ill in the mental health field: I had never heard of Fitness to Practice rules, but that explains a lot about the field, if the people most likely to be empathetic practitioners are barred from practicing.
nilchance: Picture of a pomegranate with spilled seeds, text "I think you're confused, I'm not Persephone" (pink typewriter)
Because my head really hurts and I can't do much more than empty my bookmarks this week:
- What I learned about grounding for sexual abuse survivors: Trigger warning for descriptions of sexual abuse. I found this post illuminating, and bought more socks.
- Six pregnancy tests in one week: "I visited Christian pregnancy centers that lure women in with false promises of medical care. Here's what they told me about abortions, breast cancer, shame, and death."
- I'm not okay with Chris Brown performing at the Grammys: "I’m frustrated that the mainstream media is covering this story like it’s any comeback story, like an exiled prince’s return to a former glory, like this is another political timeline — as though some rich and powerful old white men in the music business have not just issued an enormous ‘f**k you’ to every woman who has been, is or will be on the receiving end of domestic violence."
- Sayonara, big Pharma: "No new drugs. How stupid is this? Imagine if the movie industry were to announce that there were no new films in production."
- Vetville: "More than two million American veterans have served in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. Many came home wounded, most came back changed, thousands have committed suicide. Who is trying to help them? At a small farm in Tennessee, marines are taking care of one another."

And one cool thing: Code Year will teach women how to program. For free.
nilchance: Picture of a pomegranate with spilled seeds, text "I think you're confused, I'm not Persephone" (Default)
- Vicki's thesis is online.
- In defense of pit bulls: "I’m going to show you pictures of my dog. Yes, this is potentially about as exciting as when someone corners you with the pictures in their wallet of relatives you don’t even know. I would apologize, but I don’t actually feel bad at all. Because my dog is a pit bull and I want you to see her."
- Write like a motherfucker: "So write, Elissa Bassist. Not like a girl. Not like a boy. Write like a motherfucker."
- We're called survivors because we're still here: "Your experience is yours, not mine, and I can’t assume that I know all about it. You get to have your own feelings."
- How to be a fan of problematic things: "Liking problematic things doesn’t make you an asshole... After all, most texts have some problematic elements in them, because they’re produced by humans, who are well-known to be imperfect. But it can be surprisingly difficult to own up to the problematic things in the media you like, particularly when you feel strongly about it, as many fans do."
- Not staying silent: real problems: "Sometimes it’s the internalised voice, sometimes it’s through prodding by another: ‘there are people worse off than you. What are you complaining about? Other people have real problems.’"
- An open letter for these trying to understand depression: what it says in the title. I can't decide on a quote because it's all amazing. Read it, love it.

Elements of a great bra: I'm a 38I and so this is very relevant to my big-boobed interest.

Milo V's youtube channel has episodes of an old show called Opposite Sex, which also features baaaaaby!Chris Evans. Some of the gender politics are appalling, and there's an actual VERY SPECIAL GAY EPISODE in there, but Chris takes his shirt off a lot and it's pretty. Also, there's Allison Mack, who I like lots. And sometimes she plays badminton with no bra on.

On Interpersonal Badness: "If somebody is investing time, resources, and energy into convincing you of your own worthlessness, that same somebody has revealed to you that they have a lot to lose if you don’t believe them. They’re protecting their own loss of power. Which means they perceive you as somebody who can take that power away. If somebody is putting in the work to knock you down, it’s because they’ve got something to fear about you if you’re standing up."

The Inner Critic: "There’s another assumption in writings about the importance of “turning off” the inner critic, which is that all children have a magical reserve of resilience and that is why they are so creative. These children simply don’t care what anyone else thinks, and the Creative Adult must recapture that sense of adventure by silencing the inner critic! It sounds so easy!" This is an interesting point. I noticed in Julia Cameron's work a lot of fatphobia and ablism but this angle hadn't occurred to me.

I'm still reading, so there may be a second edition of linkspam later. But I need lunch.

Stalking, RPS and femslash. This is really interesting stuff about why RPS has nothing to do with stalking and why we need to talk about this kind of thing in fandom.

Great post on why you shouldn't be a dick to hotel staff. I hadn't thought about this angle of the fail, but yes. So much this.

I may end up writing a post today about what 'an harm it none, do as thy will' actually means to me as an ethical code, because man. The gods may advocate personal responsibility, but that doesn't mean replying to "why did you hit me?" with "well, maybe you shouldn't have stepped in front of my fist."

Swine Flu, debunking the myths. Brace yourself for some media panic, y'all.

What Is and Isn't Racist: in short, a POC's definition of what's racist beats a white person's definition because POC deal with racism EVERY DAY. Every day. Even those white allies who try to unpack their own privilege can disengage when it gets to be too hard, but POC don't have that option.

Defining intolerance: Carrie Prejean says that she believes in "opposite marriage". My saying that her opinion is wrong is not intolerance, because of the difference between an opinion and a basic civil right.

A study in Psychomatics "proves" that people with Chronic Fatigue have personality deficits? Yeah, sure. Quote: People with CFS worry about what’s going to happen to them, avoid activities that harm them, and set their outlook sights too low. This is maladaptive. People with CFS also don’t worry enough about what’s going to happen to them, persistently engage in activities that harm them, and set their sights unrealistically high. This is maladaptive.

In related news, Blogging Againsr Disablism Day is May 1st. I'll be participating (my first year! I'm a BAD virgin!) and I encourage everybody else to do so.

Why Aren't People Commenting On My Post/Story/Whatever?

1% of the people who read you are heavily medicated. Their loved ones have taken away their keyboards for everyone's safety... 1% of the people who read you are seriously undermedicated. Their loved ones have taken away their keyboards so they still have friends when the meds kick back in.

This is EPIC TRUTH, people. Fan sociology at work!

Also, Purring background noise for your computer. I can feel my blood pressure going down.

- Will Shetterly: STILL on the list of fucking FAIL white privileged sci-fi authors. Apparently in order to silence discussion of racism in sci-fi, he revealed POC blogger [livejournal.com profile] coffeeandink's full name. When she raised hell to get him to take it down, he had the balls to ask why she didn't thank him. FAIL FAIL FAIL. Kathryn Cramer was also involved. And frankly, Elizabeth Bear gets a FAIL stamp too for saying that despite using online emotional violence to reinforce his white privilege, he's still a nice guy. Further details here on [livejournal.com profile] coffeeandink's journal.

- Why I Would Not Have Greenlit Dollhouse, or "why Jess couldn't stomach more than half an episode."

Y'all have probably seen this, but whatever.

- Jessica Simpson, the mountain out of a molehill celebrity thing. Jesus H CHRIST, people, look at how cute she is! Lookit the wee belly! I think she's gorgeous with a little extra weight. Stupid mass media, making me side with Ashlee Simpson, but: is this the message you want to send your daughters? Is it surprising that our country has such a high incidence of eating disorders?

- Why is Venus on a diet? I FOAMED when I got this in my e-mail, and I seriously considered whether I should post it again. But if we don't rage and flail when stupid shit like this happens, people will forget that it is indeed the stupidest of shit. Also, plz consult my earlier rant about the goddess being represented as a) white, and b) too skinny to lift a sword or an apple.

- Icon Me Monday, or "I think I'm linking my thread correctly."

- Jared is dating Genevieve Cortese? For srs? I am so behind on my rumors.
- KITTENS.
- But He's Only Half Black, a line by line dissection of arguments like Robin McKinley's.

More linkspam ahoy!

- Michelle Obama's father has MS." I'm not sure how I missed this; I guess that's what I get for missing the Democratic National Convention? So for caregivers and family members, who can never get enough credit for being the patient souls they are, there's some representation in both parties.

- Coach, Heal Thyself: a chronic pain life-coach learns that she needs to listen to her own advice. Plus she gets credit for having a blog that references the Vagina Monologues.

- The Body Chronic lists 5 things she's learned about stress + chronic illness.

- Some slides from Dr. Mease's Recognizing Fibromyalgia As a True Disease Entity are shown here. (Warning: I found the site's color scheme a little jarring, but the slides' main site requires registering to view.) Quote from another slide: "We animals have a volume control setting for how our brain and spinal cord processes pain." Turn it up to 11! *headbang*

Oh, Helen Mirren, no.

Anti-fat legislation in Alabama may have deadly consequences.

Why I don't support the Jerry Lewis telethon: Lewis was contacted because the young man said he wanted to go off the vent and die. Lewis reported to the Telethon audience that when he telephoned this young man, he apologized to Lewis for not beating the “disease." He'd told his parents that he was sorry for having brought them down and being a burden. He took himself off the vent (which could not have been done without the permission of his parents). This, said Lewis, is why we have to beat this disease. Lewis said not a word about assuring him that he was not a burden, or arguing that this was a bad reason to decide to die, or suggesting that he wait-and-see, not even to wait for the cure the Telethon has been promising all these years.

And, just to cut through the depression: Rescue Ink, an organization of bikers against animal cruelty. Do I have to mention how bad I want a Jeff/Jensen AU where Jeff is a big bad biker who saves kittens? No, I do not.
nilchance: Picture of a pomegranate with spilled seeds, text "I think you're confused, I'm not Persephone" (indolence)
I find this and this clip, Jeremy Sisto in an unaired pilot for Young Americans, much more interesting after reading [livejournal.com profile] nyxie's awesome teacher!Jensen/student!Jared AU. But mostly it's all about Jeremy in geek drag reciting Shakespeare in that deep, deep voice and grabbing his dick. Oh yeah, baby, recite more Romeo and Juliet. That's the stuff. *fan face* Whoo.

Jeff on The View. Oh, heart. As I babbled in e-mail: I love a) that Jeff ripped his hamstring attempting to play soccer and was bruised from ankle to ass for WEEKS and b) he feels free to SHARE this fact with the world and Barbara Walters. That shit is AWESOME. "Oh, yeah, I was one big bruise from ankles to ass," and Whoopi
Goldberg is like "ah, you are lesbian Kryptonite! the flirting is too much!" and Barbara is like, *pinchy face of doom*. Oh, Jeff. Never ever ever grow a sense of tact.

My tinhat also loves that when one of the women try to tell Jeff that he is a MAN'S MAN, he's like *snicker giggle* *look at Whoopi* *start giggling harder*. Because Jeff is 12.

Also: O HAI, GRAVEROBBER, YOU ARE PRETTY.

My hormones are so jacked up right now, for serious. I owe comments for the mpreg, not to mention the next part, but instead I'm watching this:

NEEEEE JEFF WITH BISOU. I adore his dorky-ass laugh and him hoisting his 90-some lb dog onto his lap and him drinking heavily with firefighters and eeeeeee so much love.
